Dubai’s Visit Visa Regulations: No more grace period, immediate fines on expiry

Travel agents inform visitors as Dubai scraps grace period for visit visas, imposing fines as permits expire

In a significant policy change, Dubai has abolished the grace period for visit visas, resulting in immediate fines for individuals who overstay their permits. The new directive, which applies to visas issued in Dubai, has been communicated by travel agents to their clients. This move marks a departure from the previous default grace period, signaling stricter enforcement of visa regulations in the emirate.

Previously, a grace period of 10 days was automatically granted upon entry for visitors with 30 or 60-day visit visas. However, as of May 15, Dubai authorities have eliminated this grace period, requiring visitors to leave the country before their visa expires. Failure to do so will result in overstay fines.

Call center executives from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) have confirmed that the removal of the grace period applies to visit visas issued throughout the UAE. Fines will be calculated as soon as the visa document expires, leaving no room for leniency.

Travel agents, who previously faced penalties for overstays, are no longer involved in the process. Overstaying visitors are now responsible for paying fines themselves before exiting the country. Agents, compelled to protect their interests, are now required to file absconding charges against visitors who exceed the duration of their visas, leading to financial losses for the agents.

Overstaying one’s visa is considered a serious offense and can result in immigration complications at airport counters. Visitors are urged to exit the country before their visit visa expires to avoid penalties. Overstaying fees amount to AED50 per day, with additional charges of AED320 for relevant fees and exit permits. For example, a person overstaying for 10 days will be required to pay AED500 plus AED320, totaling AED820.

Visitors have the option to pay fines online through the ICP website before departing for the airport. However, if they choose to pay at the airport, immigration officers will guide them to the relevant counter to settle the fines.

Dubai’s decision to eliminate the grace period for visit visas reflects a stricter approach to visa regulations. Visitors are advised to stay informed about their visa validity and ensure they depart the country before their permits expire to avoid penalties. The change underscores the UAE’s commitment to maintaining a well-regulated immigration system and emphasizes the importance of compliance for all visitors.
