Dubai Achieves Record-Breaking Tourism Performance in 2023, Maintaining Global Leadership

In 2023, Dubai achieved its best-ever annual tourism performance, welcoming 17.15 million international overnight visitors, marking a 19.4% year-on-year growth compared to 2022. This surpassed the previous record of 16.73 million visitors in 2019. The growth aligns with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, aiming to consolidate Dubai’s position as a top global city. Dubai’s vibrant and diverse offerings, supported by world-class infrastructure, contributed to its recognition as the No.1 global destination for the third consecutive year in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2024.

The tourism sector’s robust performance correlates with Dubai’s 3.3% GDP growth in the first nine months of 2023, with accommodation and food services witnessing an 11.1% growth. Dubai’s international visitor performance outpaced global tourism trends, reaching 88% of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2023. The Middle East, led by the UAE, surpassed pre-pandemic levels with a 22% growth in visitation, showcasing the region’s global recovery leadership.

Dubai’s hospitality sector exceeded pre-pandemic levels across key metrics, with an average occupancy of 77.4% in 2023, one of the world’s highest. The hotel inventory reached a milestone of 150,000 room keys, and occupied room nights surged to a record high of 41.70 million, a 30% increase from 2019. Dubai’s commitment to sustainability, global partnerships, and innovative events contributed to its status as a liveability hub and international events destination.

The city’s recognition across various fronts, including being named the No.1 city to relocate to in 2023 and the best city in the world for remote workers, highlights its appeal as a thriving global hub. Dubai’s sustained success and growth in 2023 set the stage for future initiatives, including the Dubai Master Plan for Public Beaches and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aimed at enhancing tourism offerings, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting sustainable development.
