New labour law: Teenagers are now allowed to work in UAE

Teenagers aged 15 and up can work after obtaining written consent from their guardians and a medical fitness report, according to Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on regulating labor relations, which was announced on Monday.

The latest legal modifications on teen employment come after the government introduced a new temporary work visa for teenagers over 15 in September, allowing them to work part-time while attending school.

The executive regulations, which are expected to be released soon, will specify which industries are forbidden from hiring teens, with exceptions for businesses that may train juveniles in the workplace.

Teenagers can now work under the following conditions, according to the new law:

  • Work for no more than six hours per day. Teenagers aged 15 and up are entitled to at least one hour of rest every day, to be set such that they do not work for more than four hours in a row.
  • There are no work shifts between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
