Sharjah’s Sir Bu Nair Island, a safe haven for rare creatures

Sir Bu Nair Island, declared a natural reserve by a government edict, is one of the most significant nesting places for the endangered hawksbill turtle and is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s list.

A hawksbill turtle arrived on the island on June 1st, one of hundreds that began coming three months ago to nest on the island, increasing the total number of nests to over 300 scattered among 27 beaches in Sharjah.

The island is called ‘Red Island’ because of its reddish terrain. There are more than 76 types of fish and 40 types of coral reefs on the island and in its surroundings, which has pristine beaches and clear waters.
