This Filipino artist in Dubai has won AED30,000 in ‘Art for Change’ competition

Jayson Soberon, a talented Filipino artist and graphic designer, has triumphed in the sixth edition of the Murals and Art Competition “Art for Change,” hosted by The Waterfront Market in partnership with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The competition, which supports COP28’s vision for a sustainable world, awarded Soberon the top prize of AED 30,000 for his mural titled ‘Sustainability.’

Soberon’s winning piece, set to be permanently displayed at the Waterfront Market, celebrates the ‘Year of Sustainability’ in the UAE. It draws inspiration from the country’s sustainability slogan “Today for tomorrow,” featuring themes like renewable energy, affordable food, water conservation, recycling, and economic growth. His work underscores the importance of current actions for achieving sustainable development goals and securing a future for coming generations.

Officials from Dubai Culture and the Waterfront Market praised Soberon’s contribution. Khalil Abdulwahid Hassan, Director of the Fine Arts Department at Dubai Culture, emphasized the role of art in promoting sustainability and conservation messages within society. Mohammad Al Madani, Waterfront Market Associate Director, highlighted the competition’s goal of inspiring artists to effect positive change and raise environmental awareness, commending Soberon’s mural for its impactful depiction of sustainability themes.
